Furzefield header

This web site started life as a single page back in March 1998 just for fun. I added to it as time went by but had to move house to the seaside so the site over one full year was never finished.

The site includes over sixty images of the wild flowers that appeared in the wood and meadow during my visits. They are listed on a month by month basis as I photographed them.

There is also a page of illustrations of the birds I identified in the wood. Some of these birds are quite common, others are quite unusual I think. My favourite is the spectacular yellow, red, black and white Goldfinch - you can't miss this one if you see it.

Furzefield Wood and Meadow, managed by the Countryside Management Service (CMS), was designated a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) by Hertsmere Borough Council in September 1998. This should offer the area some protection from the development of local light industry and pollution.

A group of volunteers called the Friends of Furzefield Wood were formed to help improve Furzefield Wood. If you would like to volunteer (activities like clearing footpaths and planting trees) then hit the 'Friends' button on the right to read more about the Friends of Furzefield and their work. There is a newsletter available to interested parties detailing developments in the wood. This information was valid 1998-2000.

* 2004 This site has not been updated for a number of years as I no longer live in the area. Therefore,  much information will be out of date.
