February DiaryBullfinches

Early February and it finally stopped raining. The Sun is actually shining! It has been dry for the first week of February although the wind is up and it's turning cold. Today I saw a male/female pair of bullfinches flitting around the brambles. The male was much more brightly coloured crimson than this illustration. The Friends have been tree planting again. I saw a party of local schoolchildren too.

Mid-February. The recent few of days of sunshine and crisp frosty mornings seem to have brought things along a little. I see the bluebells pushing their way through the, now dry, leaf litter and there are catkins all over the hazel wands; the ubiquitous cow parsley is showing too.

GoldfinchThe rain came back again at towards the end of February, nice and wet again, and I thought the worst of it was over. I saw the bullfinches again and a spectacular Goldfinch by the kissing gate. And this, when the news reports that there are only 100,000 breeding pairs in the whole country. I've seen the Goldcrests I mentioned last month again and I've been hearing a Woodpecker too, I wonder where he is...

Lords & LadiesNot much apart from that is new except I saw a few 'Lords and Ladies' (Cuckoo-pint) plants showing their bright green leaves in the undergrowth by the brook. I missed the flowers last year and only caught the red, poisonous berry fruit on camera. This year I'll watch out for the white flowers in April and May.
